UMi Help Support Bradford in Tackling Food Insecurity
Wellsprings Together received a grant of £2,000 from UMi Community Fund to support its core costs. This grant was vital in helping the organisation coordinate the emergency food response in Bradford, ensuring that over 2,000 people living in poverty were able to access nutritious food during a time of increasing need.
The funding enabled Wellsprings Together to enhance the capacity of the Feeding Bradford Network to meet the growing demand for food support. With the help of this grant, the organisation expanded its efforts to help food banks serve a larger number of people, coordinated with local and national suppliers to maintain a steady supply of food, and worked with partners to transition to a delivery system to ensure that food reached those unable to collect it in person. These activities were critical in maintaining food security for many vulnerable individuals and families.
The grant made a significant difference to the health and well-being of those who were unable to access food. By providing consistent access to nutritious meals, the project alleviated immediate pressures faced by many families, reducing hunger and promoting well-being throughout the community. This support was instrumental in helping people during a time of heightened need, contributing to the overall resilience of the community.
While Wellsprings Together faced several challenges due to rapidly changing circumstances and increased demand, the organisation successfully adapted to continue delivering essential services. Some activities had to be adjusted or postponed, and new ways of working were implemented, such as moving certain operations online and coordinating efforts remotely. Despite these hurdles, the organisation met all its objectives and continued to provide crucial food support.
The grant has also had additional impacts on Wellsprings Together. The experience gained in managing food insecurity during challenging times has equipped the organisation with valuable knowledge and skills that will help it respond effectively to future food crises or supply chain disruptions. This preparation ensures that support will continue to reach those who need it most, even in uncertain times.
The project involved 100 dedicated volunteers, whose hard work was key to its success. Although no new volunteers were brought in specifically through this funding, the existing volunteer base remains strong and committed to supporting ongoing efforts to reduce food insecurity in Bradford. Wellsprings Together has confirmed that the work initiated with this grant will continue beyond its initial scope.
One example of the project’s impact is evident in the story of how Wellsprings Together responded when a local food bank had to close, leaving an area of Bradford without any provision. By quickly collaborating with the council, public health officials, and third sector partners, the organisation was able to set up temporary food provision that was both fast and effective, ensuring that no one in the community went without food during this critical time. This swift and coordinated response highlights the effectiveness of Wellsprings Together’s efforts and the essential role they play in supporting those in need.
