Oasis offers relief from homelessness with help from UMi
Oasis Community Housing, a Gateshead-based organisation, has received a £5,000 grant from UMi, supporting their mission to address homelessness and housing crises.
The grant has played a crucial role in helping them assist individuals in Gateshead, Sunderland and South Tyneside who are grappling with homelessness.
One individual’s journey began after a tumultuous period of homelessness due to a relationship breakdown and mental health crisis. Oasis Community Housing's 'Basis Beds' project gave them a home and a fresh start, reigniting their hope for a brighter future.
The grant supports young people facing homelessness in Gateshead and adults with complex needs across South Tyneside. This includes help with budgeting, establishing routines and accessing vital services.
Oasis Community Housing extends their services to women in Gateshead facing homelessness due to domestic abuse. This encompasses personalised safety planning, education on healthy relationships, support from Independent Domestic Violence Advisors (IDVAs) and emotional assistance.
They also offer education, employment and skills support to those furthest from the labour market in Gateshead, as well as providing Financial Capability support to individuals at risk of homelessness.
The grant has been fully utilised, benefiting recipients and the wider community. Oasis Community Housing has effectively provided an array of services to tackle these challenges, including supporting 121 individuals to access education, training or employment opportunities.
Oasis Community Housing has also delivered an impressive 8,237 advice and support sessions, aiding in preventing and assisting people in overcoming homelessness. The grant has ensured that 93% of women using the Empower Domestic Abuse service feel safer. Additionally, over the year, Oasis Community Housing has provided 786 hot meals and drinks to individuals in crisis. They conducted 80 pre-dawn morning outreach sessions, identifying and assisting rough sleepers.
Thanks to the UMi donation, the work initiated through this grant will continue well into the future. Oasis Community Housing remains determined in its mission to make a lasting impact on the lives of homeless individuals and young adults in Gateshead and the neighbouring regions. This grant has not only offered immediate relief but has also laid the groundwork for these individuals to rebuild their lives with a renewed sense of hope and purpose.
